Arson is considered a criminal offense in the United States. This crime is defined as the act of intentionally setting fire to a structure or wildlife area, often times for personal benefit. This includes anything from monetary gain to satisfaction of vengeful desires.

The results of arson are extremely damaging to those related to the affected property or area. Often times, insurance rates will go up, people are sometime injured and lives sometimes lost, and the property or land set ablaze is always damaged or ruined.

In 2007, arson fires destroyed $878 million worth of property and claimed 295 lives. While these numbers were lower than those from the previous year, it is obvious that these blazes are still a pertinent and pressing issue here in the United States. Because of this, law enforcement authorities have been taking and are continuing to take heavy steps toward greatly reducing the number of these criminal offenses.

In Texas, arson is punishable by law in varying degrees, depending on the type of damage done and the circumstances under which the fire was lit. Arson is always considered a felony, and therefore it always warrants a hefty amount of punishment. If individuals are injured or killed by the blaze, then the crime is considered to be an order of one degree higher than it otherwise would have been.
