A Modern Case of Corruption

Corruption is one thing that all societies that have governments have to deal with. Many people use their political officer for their personal gain, taking part in activities that are illegal or unethical. A very recent case of corruption is that of Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich.

Rod Blagojevich faces charges of mail fraud, wire fraud, and bribery. The most well-known extreme act, and the one that is most anomalous for U.S. politics today, is that he is alleged to have tried to sell Barack Obama’s Senate seat for personal financial gain. Additionally, however, Blagojevich is accused of withholding state money from organizations, such as a children's hospital, if he did not receive campaign contributions.

As a result of his actions, Rod Blagojevich was impeached. That is, the Illinois state House of Representatives brought formal corruption charges against the governor for his alleged corruption.

That charges against Rod Blagojevich are very serious. If convicted in a court of law, Blagojevich can face years in prison and possibly even heavy fines. Aside from the criminal penalties, however, Blagojevich will lose his prestige and respect.
