Drunk Driving in Texas

Alcohol is a major part of U.S. society. People consume it for fun, and sometimes they consume large amounts of it. As a result, they may get drunk. One of the problems that may occur when people get drunk is that they cannot drive a car. Most people understand that they should not drive a car if they are drunk. There are people, though, who will drive even if they are drunk. This is the reason that there are laws which make drunk driving a criminal offense.

Drunk driving is a serious problem in Texas, which has among the worst drunk driving rates in the United States. In 2004, 1,642 people were killed in drunk-driving related accidents. More over, an average of 70 people per day is estimated to be injured every day from drunk-driving related accidents.

Additionally, over 98,000 drunk driving arrests were made in Texas in 2004, and 303 of those people were between ages nine and 16. There were over 11,000 people between the ages of 17 and 20 arrested for drunk driving. In other words, over one-tenth of the people arrested for drunk driving were not even legally allowed to consume alcohol.

Fortunately, however, the alcohol-related fatality rate in Texas has been steadily declining over the last decade. In 2000, the fatality rate per 100 million VMT was 0.82. In 2006, it was 0.70.
