Statistics of Rape

Rape is a terrible crime, and can be worse when you are accused of doing it. However, it is far more common than we might like to believe. There have been numerous studies that have tried to show the incidence of rape, but it is not possible to find definite numbers. This is because so many rapes go unreported, and different jurisdictions have different definitions of rape.

However, there have been reports that have tried to show the incidence of rape to the best of their ability.

A report from the United Nations indicated that more than 250,000 cases of rape were recorded by the police every year. This data was compiled from 65 different countries around the world.

A report from the United States Department of Justice indicated 191,670 reported cases of rape or sexual assault in 2005. However, it is estimated that only 16% of all rapes or sexual assaults are reported to the police. It is also estimated that around 1 in 6 women in the United States have experienced sexual assault or an attempt at it.

Last year, there were approximately 85,000 women raped in the United Kingdom. That averages out to around 230 cases per day. The same report indicated that one of every 200 women was raped last year in the United Kingdom, but only 800 rape convictions occurred.

Rape and sexual assault are very dangerous crimes. Often they do not get reported. Sometimes the wrong person is indicated as the rapist.
